What a great way to spend the middle of the week! Over the past few months, 45 Tees Valley Primary schools have been working with some of our fantastic local poets to write class poems . The initiative was created by local poet Andy Croft to feed into the annual Teesside International Poetry festival: T-Junction. The newly established Tees Valley Combined Authority helped to fund the work because they recognise the importance of supporting cultural development in the area. We don’t just Talk Up Teesside for business reasons! Everything we do at the centre has an underlying purpose of developing self esteem, belief in what can be achieved and this is a great example. The anthology has just been published and to officially launch it with an invited audience from the schools involved is Michael Rosen. He is here to support the whole festival but wanted to take the opportunity to meet our young poets and congratulate them on their work. Published authors before they are 11 years old, not bad!
The event was being hosted here at Inspire2Learn and the live stream recorded below so that children back in school, parents and other interested viewers could join in the occasion. It is now there for anyone to enjoy any time. I have uploaded lots of pictures below from all of the schools who were able to come and enjoy Michael’s company. As one teacher said, ‘It is one of those moments that will stay with these children for all of their lives; receiving a copy of a book with their work published in it and meeting one of the most famous authors or our time’.
Meanwhile, we prepare for the 60 children from 15 schools who will get the opportunity to work with some of the poets from the festival during a day of poetry. Please come back to this page tomorrow to see what your children could be involved with if you are missing out this time! One of the sessions will even be live streamed most of the day so you could literally take part in real time back in school.
There are several new events and initiatives being developed across a wide range of cultural disciplines. If you would like to be kept informed please contact me:
The festival runs for the next few days with poets from all around the world so please visit the website for more details:
